About
Hello! I am a Brighton based artist who uses art therapy as a means of coping with various long term mental health conditions. I was diagnosed around the age of twelve with ‘depression.’ I am currently diagnosed as being OCD, having recurrent depressive disorder, anxiety, self-defeating personality traits and I am germ phobic. So, it’s complicated.
I have tried many therapies and medications over the years and found none of it has helped long term, with the exception to…….ART! I use it to satirise the demons of mental health, to provoke, entertain myself and to contain these monsters.
I work with many mediums, mostly collage and photography to create visual juxtapositions. Blurring the lines between what is considered the ugly and the beautiful. I love exploring stories that are mad, wonderful, fierce and unforgiving. Taking inspiration from many other sources over the years including mythology, video games, cult cartoons, history and my own personal experience of modern treatments.
Ultimately through my work I seek to celebrate and confront the uncomfortable reality of being human…..warts and all.
Much love,
Wesley Power xxx
